Kai TUCHMANN (凯图赫曼) is a member of the dramaturgy and applied theatre faculty at the dramatic literature department. He received his diploma from the directing department of the Ernst Busch Drama Academy in Berlin, Germany. After his graduation Tuchmann worked from 2006 until 2008 as in-house director at the German National Theater in Weimar, from 2008 until 2010 he was a program coordinator for the Goethe Institute in Middle East and Northern Africa, and in the season 2010/11 Tuchmann was the head dramaturge of the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg. Collaborating as director or dramaturg with several Chinese theatre companies, Tuchmann developed from 2012 on his concept of documentary theatre as a mode of alternative historiography. Since 2015 most of his creations were invited to several international and prestigious festivals, like Kunstfest Weimar (Germany), Get Lost Festival (Netherlands), Seoul Marginal Theatre Festival(Korea), Theaterspekatkel Zürich (Swiss), and Festival d'Automne à Paris (France).His creation of the “The Refuse” was shortlisted at the playwright market at Berliner Theatertreffen 2016.In addition to his artistic creation Tuchmann is also engaged in the field of research. He is particularly interested in the interdependence of transcultural theatres and historiography. His upcoming publication will be a contribution to the The Routledge Companion to Theatre and Politics (publishing date: fall 2018), in which he investigates strategies of collaborative authorship in the context of grassroot theatre in India. Tuchmann was a Visiting Scholar at the Theatre Department of the City University of New York`s Graduate Center in 2012, and since 2016 he is Member of the Advisory Board of the Marvin Carlson Theatre Center.
